Hey fam, it’s Dino. Happy Saturday!
If you are reading this in your email inbox, your two cents is now worth $37.
I hope you are having a great start to your weekend! This week was absolutely BONKERS for me so I hope you’ll forgive me for sending this out on Saturday (:
There’s some GOODIES in todays issue, so strap on your seat belts!
In Today’s Issue:
Doors vs. Wheels
Nelly Furtado Made a Comeback
The Wheels on the Bus…
What Happened
A couple days ago, a singular man on twitter started a war that didn’t need to happen.
No, I’m not talking about THAT one.
I’m talking about this one:
What seemingly began as a joke has evolved into this decades version of “The Dress” (it’s black and blue btw).
If I can be honest, I’ve been flipping back and forth for the last few days.
That is until UPS came out with this statement.
Other brands started weighing in as well.
What started as a joke has quickly become a meme, thus ingraining itself in pop culture immediately.
Why It Happened
If we have learned anything from a bipartisan political structure in America, it’s that opposing arguments work WONDERS for engagement.
There’s nothing that will go viral quite like an argument with passionate ambassadors on either side.
Not only that, but it has to make you THINK.
You can’t just say “PBJ or Ham sandwich??😤” and hope to start the next big twitter argument. There needs to be an aspect that makes us stop and think.
Not only did this question make me ponder reality for at least thirty minutes, but I genuinely did an inventory of my ENTIRE 2bed/1bath apartment to find my own argument (32 doors and 21 wheels).
Questions that make us think while simultaneously giving us a side to stand on will always take off.
Make It Happen
If you want to start the next meaningless mental feud in the world, here’s a few things to take away from this:
Pose a question that is black or white.
Find something that has NO grey. A lot of arguments can be resolved by simply saying “It’s all about the balance.” But can you think of something that is one or the other?
Have meaningless conversations.
They say that boredom is the breeding ground of creativity. Be okay with exploring conversations with friends about the most pointless topics. This may bring up ideas that would have never existed before (*cue the psychology of “shower thoughts”*)
Pursue your passions… even if they’re stupid.
This is one of the reasons I started my podcast, Hot Takes. There are a lot of STRONG opinions we develop as we grow, and by getting them out there in the world, you have the power to start some interesting conversations with others.
“I Was Born in the Wrong Decade”
What Happened
If you’ve been ANYWHERE near Tik Tok in the last two weeks, I am confident you’ve seen this man:
Seemingly overnight, Jamie Big Sorrel Hor has skyrocketed to over 5.4 million followers on Tik Tok and gained 316 MILLION views on a single Tik Tok.
In his video, he pans up from an extremely average bathroom sink to a toothpaste stained mirror and dances to a nightcore version of Nelly Furtado’s “Say it Right.”
This video went CRAZY.
Popular creators everywhere began copying it and inserting themselves into the clip. I have been trying to articulate why it happened in a sentence and found a comment that explains it best:
It’s honestly is 2022’s version of Doggface208 from 2020.
Why It Happened
Honestly…
I have no earthly idea.
Videos like these will randomly blow up.
They are the epitome of “Throw spaghetti at the wall.”
I’m not going to even TRY and break down WHY this blew up. But I do have a few ideas of how you could replicate it.
Make It Happen
TWO major things you could do to try and make a video like this yourself (and hope it blows up).
Vibez
Just vibes. But seriously. Each of these videos that blow up for no reason encapsulate a vibe all of us, deep down, have (or wish we had). What is a “vibe” you have that could translate well to others?
Oldies but goodies.
What is a GOOD song from back in the day that you feel is unappreciated? Find one and see if it fits with whatever “vibe” you are trying to share.
Let people in.
What are some of the “meaningless” things you may do on a daily basis that you could capture? Sometimes creating content isn’t planning and executing on a great idea, but it’s simply capturing a moment that conveys a feeling.
Wrap Up
I hope you enjoyed this week’s “Double Taps”
There was some absolutely wild shenanigans that took place and I already know one of the topics I will be discussing next week:
Fashion culture in Christian Worship Music
I’m super excited to dive into this conversation and I hope you are interested in hearing it!
Let me know what you thought by sharing your thoughts in my discord and be sure to check out the most recent episode of The Hot Takes Podcast below.
Question For You:
What are some viral moments you’d like me to break down? Was there something you noticed in pop culture that you’d like for me to discuss? Let me know by replying to this email or dropping a comment!
See ya’ll soon!
